What Rankshift tracks in AI Overviews
An AI Overview answers a search with a short summary, a few brands and a list of links. Rankshift records all three for every prompt you track, each time it runs.
-
Visibility
The share of AI Overviews that name your brand, per prompt and overall.
-
Position
Where you appear among the brands in the overview: first, second or last.
-
Share of voice
Your mentions as a share of all brand mentions, next to your competitors.
-
Citations
The domains and URLs the overview links to, and how often your own site is one of them.
-
Sentiment
Whether the overview describes you in positive, neutral or negative terms.
-
Countries and languages
Each prompt tracked in the countries and languages you sell in.
How often AI Overviews name you, prompt by prompt
Add the questions your buyers type into Google. Rankshift runs each one in Google Search, stores the full AI Overview and marks your brand and your competitors in it. You see where you are named and where you are missing.
- Full AI Overview stored for every run
- Visibility per prompt and for the whole project
- Filter by persona, scenario or tag
One search is not a measurement
Search the same question twice and the AI Overview can name different brands and cite different sources. Rankshift repeats every prompt on the schedule you set and reports visibility as a share of all runs, so one lucky or unlucky result does not decide your number.
- Daily or weekly runs, set per prompt
- History per brand, prompt and model
- Unlimited countries and languages
Which competitors AI Overviews name next to you
Add your competitors and Rankshift counts them in the same overviews. You get visibility and share of voice per brand, plus the position of each brand in the answer, so you know who Google puts first.
- Visibility, share of voice and sentiment per brand
- Position of each brand in the overview
- Compared on every prompt you track

Which sources AI Overviews cite
An AI Overview links to the pages it draws on. Rankshift lists every cited domain and URL on your prompts and shows how often your own site is among them. Mentions and citations are counted separately, because Google can cite your page without naming your brand.
- Cited domains and URLs, ranked by frequency
- Your own citation rate next to competitors
- Videos, forum threads and articles where you are missing
AI Overviews next to AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini
Google answers with AI in two places: AI Overviews above the search results and AI Mode, its conversational search. Rankshift runs the same prompts on both, and on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other models, so you can see where your brand is strong and where it falls behind.
- Visibility and citation rate per model
- The same prompt set on every model you select
- Nine AI models, including AI Mode and Gemini
Actions based on what AI Overviews say and cite
Tracking shows where you stand. The Action Center turns what Rankshift finds in the overviews into tasks: a page to update, a publication to pitch, a comparison article to get listed in. Each task is tied to the prompts and sources behind it and lands on a board your team can work through.
- Prioritized by expected impact on your visibility
- Based on the answers and sources from your prompts
- One board for outreach, page updates and community replies

Questions about AI Overviews tracking
What is a Google AI Overviews tracker?
A Google AI Overviews tracker runs a fixed set of prompts in Google Search on a schedule and records the AI Overview that appears. From those overviews it reports how often your brand is named, where it sits in the answer, which sources are cited and how you compare with competitors.
How does Rankshift collect AI Overviews?
Rankshift runs your prompts in Google Search and stores the full AI Overview: the summary, the expanded version and the list of sources. It records whether you are named in the answer or only cited as a source. You choose how often each prompt runs, daily or weekly.
Why does the AI Overview change for the same search?
Google generates the overview when the search is made and builds it from the pages it finds at that moment, so the brands and sources can change from one run to the next. That is why Rankshift reports visibility as a share of all runs. One check tells you very little.
Does ranking first in Google put me in the AI Overview?
Not necessarily. The AI Overview sits above the organic results and is built from several pages, not from one. A page can rank well and be left out, and a brand can be named while its own site is not cited. Rankshift measures how often you are named, your position among the brands in the overview and whether your pages are cited.
What is the difference between a mention and a citation?
A mention is your brand name in the text of the overview. A citation is a link to a page that Google used as a source. You can have one without the other, so Rankshift tracks them separately.
Which other AI models can I track?
Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI and Mistral. AI Mode is tracked as its own model, separate from AI Overviews. The same prompts can run on each model, so you can compare your visibility in AI Overviews with the rest.
How do I improve my visibility in AI Overviews?
Start with the sources. AI Overviews are built from the pages Google cites, so look at which domains come back on your prompts and where competitors are listed and you are missing. Then update your own pages so they answer the prompt directly. The Action Center turns these findings into specific tasks, ranked by expected impact.
