TL;DR

ChatGPT has ads now. They started as a US test in February 2026, and since then OpenAI has opened a self-serve Ads Manager and rolled sponsored placements out to Free and Go users in dozens of countries, including most of Europe.

If you’re a marketer, that creates a new blind spot. OpenAI’s Ads Manager will tell you how your own campaigns are doing: impressions, clicks, spend, conversions. It won’t tell you which competitors are buying placements on the prompts your customers ask, what their ad copy says, or where the click goes. And unlike Meta or Google, OpenAI doesn’t offer a public ad library you can browse.

So a new category of tool has appeared to fill the gap. ChatGPT ads trackers run a set of prompts on a schedule, record any sponsored placement that shows up, and build a picture of who’s advertising where. Some are part of AI visibility platforms, some come from the paid search world, and one is a free public index.

We build one of these tools, so we’ve spent a lot of time looking at how the others work. Fair warning up front: Rankshift is our product, and it’s also our top pick. We’ll explain why, and we’ll be clear about where another tool is the better fit.

  • Adthena for enterprise paid search teams
  • SE Ranking for teams that already use an SEO suite
  • Gauge for advertisers already running campaigns

What makes the best ChatGPT ads tracking tool?

First, a definition, because “ChatGPT ads tracking” gets used for two different jobs.

One is measuring your own campaigns: spend, clicks, and conversions. That’s a job for OpenAI’s Ads Manager plus your analytics setup, and we cover it briefly near the end. The other is competitive intelligence: seeing who else is advertising on the prompts you care about, and what they’re saying. That second job is what the tools on this list do, and it’s the one OpenAI gives you no help with.

It’s also worth knowing how these tools work, because it sets expectations. None of them has access to OpenAI’s ad auction. They all run prompts through ChatGPT again and again and record what comes back. That means every number you see is an observed sample, not a census. A good tracker is upfront about that, and it lets you choose the prompts being sampled.

With that in mind, here’s what we looked for:

  • Detection on your own prompts. A market-wide index is interesting, but the question you need answered is what’s happening on the prompts your buyers ask. The best tools let you bring your own prompt list and run it on a regular schedule.
  • The full creative, not just a name. Knowing that a competitor advertised is a start. Knowing the headline, the copy, the landing page, and the prompt that triggered the ad is what lets you respond.
  • Organic and paid in the same view. This is the big one. In an SE Ranking analysis of 50,006 commercial prompts from August 2026, about 26% showed a paid placement, and the advertiser was also cited among the organic sources in just 3.63% of those placements. In other words, the brands paying to appear are mostly not the brands ChatGPT already recommends. You can only see that gap if both layers are tracked on the same prompts.
  • Gap and share reporting. Raw detections don’t tell you much on their own. We wanted tools that roll them up into something you can act on: where competitors advertise and you don’t, who owns the most ad space, and how that changes week to week.
  • Pricing you can find. The category is new and a lot of vendors hide the number behind a demo. We gave credit to tools with public pricing and a trial.

A note on method: we know Rankshift from the inside. For the other tools, we worked from each vendor’s product documentation, feature pages, and published pricing, and judged them against the same criteria. Features and prices in this category change quickly, so check the vendor’s site before you commit.

The best ChatGPT ads tracking tool overall

Rankshift

Rankshift pros:

  • Ad detection runs on the same prompts you already track for organic visibility
  • Gap report shows the prompts where competitors advertise and you don’t
  • Ads library keeps every headline, copy, landing page, and triggering prompt
  • Unlimited projects and users on every plan

Rankshift cons:

  • Ad tracking covers ChatGPT only for now (Google AI Mode and AI Overviews are listed as coming soon)
  • It’s competitor intelligence, not campaign reporting: your own spend and conversions still live in OpenAI’s Ads Manager

Most ChatGPT ads trackers answer one question: who’s advertising? Rankshift is built around a more useful one. On the prompts that matter to your business, who shows up organically, who’s paying to show up, and where are you missing from both?

That works because ChatGPT ads tracking isn’t a separate product here. Rankshift is an AI visibility platform first. You give it the prompts your buyers ask, and it runs them on a schedule you choose (daily, a few times a week, or weekly) across nine AI engines, capturing the answers from the real interfaces. That gives you the usual visibility metrics: mentions, citations, share of voice, and sentiment. On ChatGPT, those same runs also record any sponsored placement that appears. So every prompt in your project has an organic story and a paid story side by side, and you don’t have to maintain a second prompt list to get it.

The ad data is organized into four views:

  • The gap report ranks your prompts by competitor ad detection rate and shows the top competitor on each one. It’s the fastest way to see where rivals are buying visibility while you’re absent, and you can export the list.
  • The ads library stores every creative Rankshift has seen, yours and theirs, with the headline, the copy, the landing page, the prompt that surfaced it, and how often it’s been seen.
  • The advertiser leaderboard ranks brands by detections, prompts reached, and share of ads, with a week-over-week trend.
  • Share of voice tracks what portion of detected placements belong to your brand over time.

The combination is what makes this more than a way to peek at competitor ads. If a competitor starts advertising on a prompt where ChatGPT already recommends you, that’s a position to defend. If they’re advertising where you’re invisible, you can decide whether to fix that with content, with budget, or with both. And because Rankshift’s Action Center turns your visibility data into recommendations for what to work on next, the organic half of that decision comes with a to-do list.

It’s also priced for teams that aren’t enterprises. Every plan includes unlimited projects and users, which matters if you’re an agency watching the ad space for several clients, and you can track across as many countries and languages as you need.

The limits are worth knowing. Ad detection currently covers ChatGPT only, with Google AI Mode and AI Overviews marked as coming soon. And Rankshift won’t replace Ads Manager: it shows you the competitive picture around your campaigns, not your own cost per click.

Rankshift pricing: From €69/month billed annually for the Starter plan (150 prompts); 30-day free trial with no credit card required.

The best ChatGPT ads tracking tool for enterprise paid search teams

Adthena

Adthena pros:

  • Monitors more than 300,000 prompts a day across categories and markets
  • Flags “greenfield” prompts where nobody is advertising yet
  • Built-in AI analyst, plus API and MCP access

Adthena cons:

  • Paid placements only, so you’ll need a second tool for organic AI visibility
  • Setup starts from categories of interest, which suits market-level analysis more than a short custom prompt list

Adthena has been doing competitive intelligence for Google Ads for years, and its ChatGPT Ads Intelligence product brings the same mindset to AI. If your team already thinks in terms of impression share and auction insights, this will feel familiar.

The scale is the selling point. Adthena says it monitors more than 300,000 prompts every day, which gives it a view of the whole market and not just the handful of prompts you thought to track. From that, it reports your ad presence rate, your share of search across ChatGPT placements, and a searchable library of competitor ad copy. The greenfield report is the cleverest part: it surfaces prompts where neither you nor your competitors are advertising, which is where an early mover gets the placement to itself.

There’s also an AI analyst called Arlo that answers questions about competitor activity and prompt gaps in plain language, and API and MCP access if you want to pull the data into your own reporting or AI agents.

The trade-off is focus. Adthena tracks paid placements and nothing else, so it can’t tell you whether ChatGPT already recommends you organically on a prompt where a competitor is advertising. For a paid search team with its own budget and its own tools, that’s fine. For a marketing team trying to understand AI visibility as a whole, it’s half the picture.

Adthena pricing: $399/month after a 21-day free trial.

The best ChatGPT ads tracking tool if you already use an SEO suite

SE Ranking

SE Ranking pros:

  • Ad detection is part of Competitive Research, with no separate contract or add-on
  • Tracks advertisers, destination links, and month-over-month changes
  • Backed by published research on how often ChatGPT shows ads

SE Ranking cons:

  • You’re buying a full SEO platform to get it
  • Organic AI tracking is a paid add-on on top of the base plan

SE Ranking is an all-in-one SEO platform: rank tracking, site audits, backlink analysis, the lot. Its ChatGPT Ads Tracker lives inside the Competitive Research module, which means that if you’re already a customer, you may have a ChatGPT ads tracker and not know it.

The tracker shows which advertisers are paying to appear in ChatGPT answers, the destination link each ad carries, and how ad presence shifts from month to month, including share-of-voice trends across competitors. Detection runs on a recurring cadence in the background, so there’s nothing to trigger manually.

SE Ranking has also done some of the more useful public research on the channel. Its August 2026 study of 50,006 commercial prompts across 20 niches found paid placements on 25.94% of them, from 1,159 unique advertisers, with one sponsored card per answer. If you want a sense of how crowded your category is likely to be, that’s a good baseline.

The catch is the packaging. If you don’t need an SEO suite, this is a lot of software to buy for one feature. And tracking your organic visibility in AI answers sits in a separate AI Search add-on, so getting paid and organic side by side costs more than the base plan suggests.

SE Ranking pricing: Core plan from $129/month ($103.20/month billed annually); the AI Search add-on is an extra $89/month on annual billing.

The best ChatGPT ads tracking tool for advertisers already running campaigns

Gauge

Gauge pros:

  • Connects to your OpenAI Ads account to report budget, spend, impressions, clicks, CTR, and CPC
  • Shows competitor ads on your tracked prompts, with ad copy and appearance counts
  • Checks whether ChatGPT already mentions you on the prompts where ads run

Gauge cons:

  • Starts at $599/month
  • The main advantage only applies if you’re already spending on ChatGPT ads

Every other tool on this list looks outward, at what competitors are doing. Gauge is the one that also looks inward. Connect your OpenAI Ads key, and it loads your campaign and ad group metrics (budget, spend, impressions, clicks, CTR, and CPC) into the same product that watches your competitors.

That’s a real convenience if you’re running campaigns. You can look at how a campaign is performing, then see which competitors are showing ads on the same buyer questions, what their copy says, and how often each ad has appeared. Gauge picks up ad placements as part of its daily prompt tracking, and it’ll also tell you whether ChatGPT already mentions your brand organically on the prompts where ads are running, so you can spot where you’re paying for visibility you might be able to earn.

The price puts it in a different bracket from most of this list, though. The Growth plan runs 600 prompts a day, which is generous, but at $599/month it’s built for teams with a serious ChatGPT ads budget. If you’re still at the stage of working out whether to advertise at all, you don’t need your campaign data in the tool yet, because you don’t have any.

Gauge pricing: Growth plan from $599/month (600 prompts run daily); custom pricing for Enterprise.

The best free benchmark for ChatGPT ad activity

Writesonic AI Ads Index

Writesonic pros:

  • Free, public, and updated daily
  • 90 days of history, with top advertisers and an industry breakdown

Writesonic cons:

  • Market-level only, so it can’t tell you what’s happening on your prompts
  • Daily figures come from a sample and are indicative, not exact

Writesonic’s AI Ads Index answers a question none of the other tools here really tries to: how much advertising is there in ChatGPT, overall, right now?

The index analyzes roughly 450,000 AI answers a day and publishes the share that contained an ad, along with 90 days of daily history, a leaderboard of the top advertising brands, an industry breakdown, and a geographic split. It’s free, there’s nothing to set up, and it’s the quickest way to check whether ad density in ChatGPT is rising, falling, or lurching about (it does a fair bit of lurching).

That makes it useful for a different audience. If you need a chart for a strategy deck, or you’re trying to convince a skeptical boss that ChatGPT ads are worth paying attention to, the index gives you a credible number with a methodology note attached. What it can’t do is tell you anything about your competitors on your prompts. Writesonic itself describes the data as a large sample that reflects overall trends and not a census of the market.

For prompt-level work, Writesonic also sells an AI Ads Tracker inside its paid platform, which splits your tracked prompts into ads-served and organic-only and shows the sponsored placements next to the organic citations.

Writesonic pricing: The AI Ads Index is free; the AI Ads Tracker comes with a 7-day free trial.

What about tracking your own ChatGPT ad campaigns?

If what you want is to measure the campaigns you’re running, none of the tools above is the place to start (Gauge comes closest). That job belongs to OpenAI’s own tooling.

Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions for your campaigns. For conversions, OpenAI provides a pixel and a Conversions API, and recommends using both together with matching event IDs so nothing gets counted twice. You can also add UTM parameters to your landing page URLs so ChatGPT ad traffic shows up properly in your analytics.

If you manage tags through Google Tag Manager, Stape offers ready-made tags for both the OpenAI Pixel and the Conversions API. And if you need attribution across several ad channels, platforms like RedTrack have built ChatGPT integrations.

If you’re setting this up for the first time, we’ve written step-by-step guides to ChatGPT ads conversion tracking with Google Tag Manager, and to custom audiences in ChatGPT ads, which let you exclude existing customers or focus your budget on the people you most want to reach.

The two kinds of tracking complement each other. Ads Manager tells you what your money did. A competitive tracker tells you what everyone else’s money is doing, which is the part you can’t see from inside your own account.

Which ChatGPT ads tracker should you use?

For most teams, our answer is Rankshift. The reasoning is the same whether you’re a small marketing team, an agency, or an enterprise brand: ads are one part of how you show up in AI answers, not a separate channel. SE Ranking’s data suggests the brands paying to appear in ChatGPT and the brands ChatGPT recommends on its own are mostly different brands. To do anything useful with that, you need both pictures on the same prompts, in one tool.

That’s where Rankshift is the most complete option on this list. In one platform, you get:

  • Organic visibility across nine AI engines: mentions, citations, share of voice, and sentiment, captured from the real interfaces.
  • ChatGPT ads tracking on those same prompts: the gap report, the ads library, the advertiser leaderboard, and your share of voice in the ad space.
  • Recommendations, not just dashboards: the Action Center turns your visibility data into a list of things to work on next.
  • Reporting that fits your stack: integrations with Looker Studio, BigQuery, and Power BI, plus API and MCP access on the Professional plan and up.

For marketing teams, that means one tool and one prompt list instead of a visibility tracker plus a separate ads tracker. You can see where you’re recommended, where competitors are paying to appear, and what to do about it, without stitching exports together.

For agencies, every plan includes unlimited projects and users, and you can set tracking to run daily, a few times a week, or weekly, depending on what each client needs. Pitch Projects are free and unlimited, and they let you collect up to 500 AI responses for a prospect before they sign.

For enterprise teams, Rankshift tracks across unlimited countries and languages, and the Enterprise plan adds SSO, SLA support, a dedicated account manager, custom prompt tracking, and training sessions.

There are narrower cases where another tool fits. If you want your own campaign metrics pulled in from Ads Manager, Gauge does that, and if all you need is a free number for a slide, Writesonic’s index will do. But if you want one platform that covers organic visibility, competitor ads, and what to do next, Rankshift is the one we’d pick.

This category is less than a year old, and it’s moving fast. OpenAI keeps expanding where ads appear, and every tool here will look different by next quarter. The basic advice should hold, though: track the prompts your buyers ask, watch both the organic and paid results, and act on the gaps.

If you want to see what’s running on your prompts, Rankshift has a 30-day free trial, and you don’t need a credit card to start.
