TL;DR

The best Rankscale alternative comes down to one question: do you want a tool that only measures your AI search visibility, or one that also helps you act on it? Rankscale is a strong, low-cost tracker, but it stops at the diagnosis. Rankshift is the closest alternative because it pairs the same monitoring across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and more with a content brief generator, an AI writer, and an Action Center, so you can close the gaps it finds without leaving the platform. The rest of the field sorts by budget, engine coverage, and whether you need AI visibility on its own or inside a full SEO suite.

  • Rankshift (recommended): monitoring plus a content and action layer, all LLMs on every plan. From EUR 69/mo (Starter, billed annually).
  • Peec AI: clean reporting for marketing teams, prompt-based pricing. From EUR 85/mo, though self-serve tiers track only 3 of 6 engines.
  • Otterly.ai: budget entry with flat pricing and strong page-level GEO audits. EUR 29/mo (Lite, 15 prompts, 4 engines).
  • Profound: now enterprise-only for brands (free trial or custom Enterprise), built on a very large real-conversation dataset.
  • AthenaHQ: a genuinely free tier, hallucination detection, and Shopify revenue attribution. Paid from USD 295/mo.
  • Scrunch AI: named AI-crawler and agent analytics for technical teams. USD 250/mo (Core, annual, 4 engines).
  • SE Ranking: AI visibility inside a full traditional SEO suite. USD 129/mo (Core; USD 103.20 annually).
  • Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: for teams already on Semrush. USD 99/mo per domain (25 prompts).
  • Writesonic: content-first, with tracking and a content engine in one tool. AI visibility sits on higher tiers.

Rankscale is good. I want to say that first, because most alternatives articles bury the tool they are comparing against under a pile of invented flaws, and Rankscale does not deserve that. Its citation analysis is the part reviewers keep singling out, its 20 USD Essentials plan is one of the lowest real entry prices in the category, and it puts its full engine list on every tier. If it already fits your workflow, you can stop reading here.

The honest reasons to look elsewhere are narrower than the listicles pretend, and two of them hold up.

The first is the credit model. Rankscale charges in credits, and the per-engine rate is uneven: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Mode cost 0.25 credits a check, DeepSeek costs 1, and Claude costs 2. So your bill depends on which engines you switch on and how often you run them, as much as on how many prompts you track. Some teams would rather pay a flat price per prompt and never think about it again. That is a reasonable thing to want, and it sends a lot of people looking.

The second is scope. Rankscale measures. It does not write content, publish it, or track your classic Google rankings, and independent reviews confirm there is nothing in the product that does. If you want the tool to help you fix what it finds, or you want AI visibility sitting inside a full SEO suite, you need something built wider.

Everything else is fit: how many engines you need included, whether you want a free way in, whether the crawler side matters to you, and whether you already pay for an SEO platform you would rather extend. Nine tools below, starting with the one we make.

Prompts, responses, and credits are not the same

This is the one bit of homework worth doing before you compare prices, because vendors count usage in different units and lining them up without translating is how people overpay. A prompt (or search term) is one question you track. A response (or answer) is one engine replying to it, once. A credit is an internal currency a query burns, sometimes a fraction of one, sometimes more.

The number that actually decides your bill is prompts times engines times how often you refresh. Track one prompt across ten engines every day for a month and that single prompt is 300 responses. This is why Rankscale’s Pro tier, sold as 1,200 credits and up to 4,800 answers, works out to roughly sixteen prompts tracked daily across every engine. A plan advertising 9,500 credits and a plan advertising 100 prompts are describing different things, and switching Claude on changes the arithmetic again because it costs more per check. When you read the sections below, hold three questions: how many unique prompts, which engines are in the price versus paid extra, and how often the data refreshes.

1. Rankshift (recommended)

Full disclosure first: we build Rankshift, so read this section as the pitch and hold it to the same sourcing I used for everyone else.

Rankshift tracks how you show up across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot, Perplexity, Claude, Meta AI, and Mistral, pulling brand mentions, citations, competitor visibility, and share of voice out of the answers with prompt-based monitoring. That part is close to table stakes now; most tools here do a version of it. What I think separates Rankshift is what happens after the measurement.

It shows which domains and URLs the models lean on in your category, and where a competitor gets cited and you are missing. Then it turns that into a prioritized plan in the Action Center, and gives you a content brief generator and an AI writer that work off the citations and entities the answers actually contain. Rankscale stops at the diagnosis. That is the cleanest difference between the two, and it is the reason most people who move from Rankscale to us give: they were tired of knowing they had a gap and having to go build the fixing workflow somewhere else.

The rest of the feature list is what you would expect from a serious tracker. Sentiment and theme analysis. Crawler analytics that show when AI bots read your pages. REST API and MCP access, so the data can feed ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, or n8n, plus connectors for Looker Studio, BigQuery, and Power BI. Because usage is credit-based, you decide how to spend it, running a core set daily on ChatGPT and only weekly on Mistral if that is what you want.

One comparison worth getting exactly right, because it is easy to fumble. Rankscale puts REST API access on its Growth tier at 385 USD a month. Rankshift does not put MCP, API, crawler analytics, or the BI connectors on its entry plan either; they start on Professional. So neither tool gives you those on the cheapest plan, and if API access on a budget is your reason for switching, check the tier before you assume. Where Rankshift does win on plan structure is projects: unlimited on every tier, against Rankscale’s dashboard caps of 2, 10, 50, and 100.

The honest trade-off is that we share Rankscale’s credit model. If credit math is the thing driving you off Rankscale, we do not solve that, and Otterly or Peec will. Rankshift is also a GEO specialist, so if you want keyword rank tracking, backlinks, and site audits in the same login, SE Ranking is the better shape.

Pricing starts at 69 EUR a month for Starter, billed annually, with USD and GBP available and roughly 10% off for paying yearly. There is a 30-day trial, no card required. Starter gives you 150 prompts a day, 9,500 credits, daily or weekly refresh, unlimited projects and seats, every LLM, ChatGPT ads tracking, the content brief generator, and the AI writer. Professional (350 prompts a day, 22,000 credits) is where MCP and API, crawler analytics, and the BI connectors come in. Business runs 850 prompts a day on 53,000 credits. Enterprise is custom and adds SSO, an SLA, and a dedicated account manager.

Who it fits: teams that liked how deep Rankscale goes but wanted the tool to help them act on it, without leaving the platform to do it.

2. Peec AI

Peec is the one I would hand to a marketing team that mostly needs clean reporting. It is a Berlin company that grew fast, past 10 million USD ARR about 16 months in, with more than 2,500 teams, and the polish shows: onboarding auto-builds your topics and prompts, and the dashboards are the kind you can put in front of a stakeholder without apologizing. Its strongest layer is sources, meaning which pages the assistants cited to build an answer, and the Actions module turns that into a to-do list, like chase a G2 review or go get mentioned in the publication a model keeps quoting.

Where it gets restrictive is under the hood, and the pricing page soft-pedals it. Every self-serve tier lets you track only 3 of 6 engines. Projects are capped at 1, 2, and 5 on Starter, Pro, and Advanced; countries per project at 1, 3, and 3; and the data API, SSO, and the full engine list all sit on Enterprise. MCP integration is on from Starter, which is a slightly odd split given the data API is not.

Pricing is prompt-based, verified on peec.ai, and shown in EUR for European billing (US buyers see USD figures that do not match): Starter 85 EUR a month, Pro 205 EUR, Advanced 425 EUR, dropping to about 70, 180, and 360 EUR annually, with a custom Enterprise tier. Unlimited users on all of them. Extra engines cost extra.

Pick it over Rankscale if you would rather count prompts than credits and you want reporting a client will read without prompting. Go in knowing you get three models by default and pay for the rest, where Rankscale hands you the whole engine list at every tier.

3. Otterly.ai

Otterly is where I would start someone who is not yet sure AI search is worth tracking. Lite is 29 EUR a month, and unlike most cheap tiers it is a real plan: 15 prompts across the four base engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot), daily, unlimited team members, and a GEO audit that grades a page on citation-readiness and tells you what is holding it back. The audit is the part people actually praise, and the output is concrete enough to hand to a writer.

The ceiling is the catch. Lite gives you one workspace and three recommendations a week, no API or MCP, and it cannot even buy extra prompt packs, which start on Standard. The four base engines are included; Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Mode are paid add-ons on top. And the step from Lite to Standard is not gentle: 15 prompts to 100, 29 EUR to 189 EUR. Standard brings API and MCP with monthly request caps (2,000 each, rising to 5,000 on Premium), unlimited workspaces, and unlimited recommendations. Premium is 489 EUR for 400 prompts. Annual billing takes off 15%. The Agency Partner program needs Standard or above.

Pick it over Rankscale for the flat, no-math pricing and the audits. But be honest about volume: Rankscale’s Essentials plan is cheaper at the very bottom, so what you are buying here is predictability and simplicity, not the lowest sticker.

4. Profound

Profound is the one that changed under everyone’s feet this year, so ignore the older listicles. It repositioned around an AI Marketer that researches and writes, raised a 180 million USD Series D, and quietly pulled its paid self-serve tiers for brands. As of now the brands pricing page has two options: a free Trial and a custom Enterprise plan. The Trial runs 10 prompts once, ChatGPT only, no projects, no history, no exports, no API. That is a demo you can run yourself, not a plan you can run a program on. Everything real, meaning multi-engine coverage across up to nine answer engines, daily tracking, all-time history, exports, API, and SSO, sits behind an Enterprise quote and a sales call.

What you pay for at that level is data almost nobody else has: Prompt Volumes is built on a huge set of real AI conversations, effectively search volume for the AI era, and the platform now bolts marketing agents on top of it. Third-party reviewers who tracked the old 99 and 399 USD tiers reported real Enterprise deals in the 2,000 to 5,000 USD-plus a month range, so confirm your own number. Agencies still get a self-serve Agency Growth plan, priced per client workspace.

Choose it over Rankscale if you are an enterprise, the conversation-volume dataset is the point, and you have a team that will act on it. The cost of entry is a contract and a demo, where Rankscale lets you sign up at a published monthly price.

5. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ sits at the funded-startup and enterprise end, built by ex-Google Search and DeepMind people, SOC 2 Type 2, with customers like Coinbase and Twilio. Two things make it stand out. It has a genuinely free tier (300 credits, 5 models, Claude included), which almost nobody at this level does, and it pairs two features I have not seen together elsewhere: it flags AI hallucinations about your brand, and it wires a Shopify integration that ties citation activity to SKU-level sales.

The floor is high once you outgrow the free grant. Real use starts at 295 USD a month on a credit meter (one credit per response), and the pieces you would most want at that price, the Citation Engine, SSO, the knowledge base, the BI connectors, are Enterprise-only. There is no MCP server, and API access is gated to paid plans.

Over Rankscale, the case is the free way in, the hallucination monitoring, and the revenue attribution for an ecommerce brand. The trade is that 295 USD floor and the best features living behind a sales call.

6. Scrunch AI

Scrunch is for the technical team, the people who think in crawl logs. It is now part of Sitecore, and its strongest feature is the one most trackers skip: named analytics on the bots themselves, ClaudeBot, GPTBot, PerplexityBot, which pages they hit and how often, paired with a GA4 view of AI referral traffic. Its roadmap centerpiece, the Agent Experience Platform, serves a structured machine-readable version of your site to those agents without touching the human-facing pages.

The problem is the entry plan. Core is 300 USD a month (250 USD billed annually, a 17% yearly discount) and covers only four engines, 125 prompts, three personas, five audits, five seats. Claude, Gemini, Meta AI, Grok, and the hallucination detection are Enterprise-only. So you pay 250 USD for the same four engines flat-priced trackers cover for far less, and the crawler depth is really what you are buying.

Pick it over Rankscale when the technical and agent side is what you actually need. Otherwise you are overpaying for engine coverage you can get cheaper.

7. SE Ranking

SE Ranking is the pick if you do not want two vendors. It is a full traditional SEO suite, rank tracking, audits, backlinks, with AI visibility built in, so the AI layer sits next to the keyword work your team already does. For an agency that is a real advantage: AEO becomes a line item on a tool you already run instead of a new subscription to justify.

The caveats: the entry price covers the whole SEO suite, so you are paying for rank tracking and backlinks whether you want them or not; the AI engine coverage has gaps, with some engines still on the roadmap; and the dedicated SE Visible dashboard refreshes weekly, which is slow if your category moves. Core is 129 USD a month (103.20 USD annually), Growth is 279 USD (223.20 USD annually), Enterprise is custom. Core covers 100 AI prompts a day, Growth 250. The white-label Agency Pack is another 69 USD a month, and SE Visible starts around 99 USD.

Over Rankscale, this is the one-vendor, SEO-plus-GEO answer that a specialist like Rankscale is never going to be. You give up some AI engine depth for it.

8. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

If you already live in Semrush, the AI Visibility Toolkit turns that subscription into an AI tracker, one login, SEO and AI data in the same account, and its Prompt Research is seeded from Semrush’s search database so you start with a real prompt set instead of a blank page.

Then the per-domain math bites. It is 99 USD a month per domain for 25 prompts, and every extra domain and every extra sub-user is another 99 USD. Five client domains is 495 USD a month before you have added a single seat. The full engine list (Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek) lives in the separate, custom-priced Enterprise AIO product. Bundled into Semrush One you get more prompts: 199 USD for 50, 299 USD for 100, 549 USD for 200, with 17% off annually. The toolkit itself covers ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, and Perplexity.

Over Rankscale, the case is one invoice and prompt research from a mature dataset. The case against is that per-domain pricing punishes anyone tracking more than one brand, and 25 prompts is thin.

9. Writesonic

Writesonic came at this from the other direction. It started as an AI writer and added GEO, so it is the content-first option: tracking, an Action Center, and a content engine in one dashboard, plus crawler analytics that surface bot traffic your Google Analytics misses. If your bottleneck is producing the content to close a gap, the bundle makes sense.

The catch is that the AI visibility features are gated to higher tiers, and the pricing is reported inconsistently enough that I will not pin a number I cannot stand behind. Writesonic’s own page advertises AI search visibility from 99 USD a month across 10 platforms; independent reviews put the meaningful GEO tier higher, closer to 199 to 249 USD, and they do not agree with each other. Confirm it on writesonic.com before you commit, because the figure seems to move by source and by visitor.

Over Rankscale, it is the write-the-content-here option a monitoring tool does not give you. The trade is that you are buying a content platform, and the visibility half sits behind the more expensive plans.

How to choose

There is no single best alternative, only the one that matches how you work and, more than anything, whether you will act on what it tells you. My rough map:

  • Want the measurement and a layer that helps you act on it, across the widest engine set: Rankshift (yes, ours).
  • Want clean reporting and prompt-count budgeting over credit math: Peec.
  • Small or solo, tight budget, want flat pricing: Otterly.
  • Enterprise with a team that will use large-scale conversation data: Profound.
  • Want a free way in, or hallucination detection, or ecommerce revenue attribution: AthenaHQ.
  • Care most about the crawler and agent side: Scrunch.
  • Want AI visibility inside a full SEO suite: SE Ranking, or the Semrush toolkit if you already pay for Semrush.
  • Want to write the fixing content in the same place: Writesonic.

One thing that holds for every tool here: prices and gates move fast, and some vendors show different numbers to different visitors on the same day. Before you pay, work out your own usage (prompts, the engines you truly need, refresh frequency) and check the vendor’s page yourself.

FAQ

Is Rankscale actually worth avoiding?

No, and I would not frame it that way. It has strong citation analysis, a low entry price, and its full engine list on every tier. The reasons to look elsewhere are structural: the credit model takes planning, and it only measures, with no content creation and no traditional rank tracking. Whether those matter is a question about your workflow, not about the tool’s quality.

What is the cheapest option?

Otterly.ai at about 29 EUR a month is the lowest flat entry among dedicated trackers, though that buys four engines and 15 prompts. For a free first look, AthenaHQ has a free Essential tier and Profound has a capped free trial (10 prompts on ChatGPT, run once). Rankscale’s own Essentials plan is lower still, so cheapest depends on whether you want flat or credit pricing.

Which of these can also create content, beyond tracking it?

Rankshift, Writesonic, and AthenaHQ all have a content or action layer beyond the dashboard, and Profound has added content execution through its AI Marketer agents. Peec gives you a prioritized task list but does not generate content. Rankscale, Otterly, Scrunch, SE Ranking, and the Semrush toolkit are measurement-first.

How do I compare credits against prompts when the units differ?

Convert everything to responses. Multiply your unique prompts by the engines you will enable by how often you refresh. A 9,500-credit plan and a 100-prompt plan only line up once you know the engine count and refresh rate behind each, because model choice and frequency change the total.

Does any of them include traditional SEO too?

SE Ranking bundles rank tracking, audits, and backlinks with AI answer monitoring, and the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit adds AI tracking to the Semrush SEO suite. The dedicated trackers, Rankshift included, stay on AI visibility and GEO rather than classic SEO.
